Island Transit Launches Spring 2026 Service Changes, Formalizes Navy Route
The informal Navy bus to Naval Air Station Whidbey Island became a fixed route today as Island Transit launched fare-free service changes across both islands.

The Navy bus that for years carried military families and civilian workers to Naval Air Station Whidbey Island became an official fixed route today, as Island Transit launched its spring 2026 service overhaul across Whidbey and Camano islands.
The conversion of the NASWI service is among the most consequential changes taking effect March 29. By formalizing what had operated as an informal Navy bus run, Island Transit made boarding schedules predictable not only for base personnel but for any member of the public using the route. Riders no longer have to navigate ambiguity about when or where the bus will stop.
Updated timetables and digital maps for Whidbey routes also went live today, published as part of a new service guide covering the March 2026 cycle. Island Transit released separate printable and interactive booklets for three distinct service zones: Whidbey, Camano, and NASWI. The guides clarify connections to ferry terminals and interregional links, including March's Point connections northward to Mount Vernon, which matter most to riders who depend on transit to travel beyond the islands entirely.
On-demand zones received revisions as well. Island Transit added and redefined certain zones where lower population density makes fixed-route service impractical. Riders in those areas can request pickups with at least two hours' notice by calling dispatch at 360-678-7771, the same number used to set up rider accounts.
All Island Transit service remains fare-free across both islands. The updated guides are available on the agency's website and at distribution points throughout Whidbey and Camano. Riders can also sign up for Rider Alerts to track any further schedule adjustments as the spring season progresses.
