Layla Suto has become one of the most recognizable names in Oak Harbor softball, and now her season has a place in school history to match the buzz around her. The Oak Harbor High School senior broke the Wildcats’ career hit record of 95 earlier in the week, then kept hitting until she reached 100, a rare mark that put her alone at the top of the program’s record book.

The record had stood for a decade, which made Suto’s surge feel bigger than a single hot stretch. As of April 23, MaxPreps listed her with a .463 batting average, 25 hits, 22 RBI, 28 runs and a .603 on-base percentage. Oak Harbor also kept winning around her, beating Bellingham 21-0 on April 21 and Mount Vernon 13-1 on April 23.

Suto’s production built on a strong junior season, when she batted .411 as Oak Harbor finished 13-8 overall and 11-4 in conference play. Listed as a 5-foot-10 senior in the class of 2026, she has also been a multi-sport athlete, adding basketball to a résumé that already made her one of the Wildcats’ most dependable hitters.

Her reach extends well beyond Oak Harbor High School. Through Whidbey Thunder travel ball, Suto has been teammates and friendly rivals with Coupeville catcher Teagan Calkins and has also played alongside Taylor Brotemarkle, giving her a familiar presence in communities that usually meet on opposite sides of the scoreboard. Matt Suto, who coaches the Whidbey Thunder and has coached both Wildcats and Wolves, said, “It’s been amazing to watch this kid work hard day after day...”

That island-wide web of softball connections helps explain why Suto’s record drew attention well past the Oak Harbor dugout. She has become a player whose name carries from the high school field to travel ball circles across Whidbey Island, and the milestone now gives that reputation a permanent stat line.

Oak Harbor Public Schools said Suto has signed her letter of intent to play softball at the University of Sioux Falls, where she will play outfield and first base while majoring in Elementary Education. For Oak Harbor, the 100-hit mark is more than a number. It is a season-defining reminder that Suto’s impact has already reached school history and is still building toward what comes next.
