71-Year-Old Bicyclist Injured After Truck Exits 7-Eleven onto Kūhiō Highway
A 71-year-old bicyclist was struck by a truck exiting the Līhu‘e 7-Eleven onto Kūhi‘o Highway; he was treated and released, raising local concerns about cyclist safety and traffic flow.

A 71-year-old Līhu‘e man riding north on Kūhi‘o Highway was struck by a pickup truck as the vehicle attempted to exit the Līhu‘e 7-Eleven and turn onto the highway. The collision occurred Jan. 17 at about 3:00 p.m., according to preliminary reports from the Kaua‘i Police Department.
Police say the vehicle involved was a 2003 Toyota truck that was exiting the convenience store parking lot and attempting a northbound turn when it collided with the northbound bicyclist. Officers noted the bicyclist was not wearing a helmet. He was transported to Wilcox Medical Center for treatment and was released the same day. The driver, a 50-year-old Līhu‘e man, reported no injuries.
Kaua‘i Police Department officers from the Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation. One northbound lane of Kūhi‘o Highway was closed for approximately 1.5 hours while officers worked at the scene, affecting afternoon traffic in the Līhu‘e area. The investigation remains open as authorities continue to gather information about the circumstances of the crash.
Local residents who may have witnessed the collision or who have video footage are asked to contact Officer Henshaw at (808) 241-1616. Those who prefer to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers Kaua‘i at 808-246-8300, submit a tip at crimestopperskauai.org, or use the Crime Stoppers Kaua‘i P3 Tips Mobile App.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns for people who bike in and around Līhu‘e, where Kūhi‘o Highway serves as a primary corridor for commuters, shoppers, and visitors alike. Intersections and driveway exits near convenience stores can be points of conflict between motor vehicles and cyclists, and the temporary lane closure underscored how quickly traffic flow can be disrupted by collisions.
For residents, the county-level implications include renewed attention to roadway safety practices and the importance of clear sightlines and cautious turning behavior at busy access points. As the police investigation continues, traffic and safety officials may review the site for potential measures to reduce future conflicts. In the short term, witnesses’ information could help clarify factors that led to the crash and guide any next steps from law enforcement or transportation planners.
