The Hanapēpē Stadium Tennis Court will shut down for six months starting March 30, with two of its four courts slated for permanent conversion into six dedicated pickleball courts under a remediation project announced by the Kaua'i Department of Parks and Recreation.

The closure runs through Sept. 30, 2026, weather permitting. When the facility reopens, players will find a substantially different layout: two tennis courts converted into six dedicated pickleball courts, with the remaining two courts continuing as tennis courts.

The scope of work is extensive. Workers will replace wooden light poles with stainless-steel poles and install new light fixtures throughout the facility. Courts will be resurfaced and repainted with updated sport striping. Both tennis posts and nets will be replaced, and new pickleball posts and nets will be installed. The project also includes fence repairs and the addition of windscreens.

The conversion reflects a pattern of pickleball expansion across Kauai County's park facilities. In 2024, the county closed Wailua Homesteads Park's tennis and basketball courts from September through December for a similar mix of resurfacing and pickleball additions, work that was part of the county's $3.1 million Playcourt Resurfacing Project. That project, contracted to Pacific Concrete Cutting & Cording, Inc., also included upgrades at Wailua Houselots Park, the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex and Puhi Park. The county has not confirmed whether the Hanapēpē remediation is funded through that same program.
