Softball at Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex will go dark for five days, and East Side teams that depend on the Kapaa diamond will have to move practices and games between May 4 and May 8 while the county resurfaces the infield.

The Kauai County Department of Parks and Recreation announced the closure on May 1 and said the work is scheduled maintenance. The field sits at the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex, listed by the county at 4600 to 4999 Kahau St. in Kapaa. The department said residents with questions can call 808-241-4460 or email parks@kauai.gov.

For families, coaches and adult recreation players, the interruption is short but immediate. The county did not name a backup diamond in the notice, so leagues and individual teams will need to sort out their own changes around the closure window. That means practices, warmups and any games tied to the complex will have to be moved elsewhere or rescheduled before play can resume after May 8.

The resurfacing matters because the infield is where wear shows up first. Fresh surface work helps keep the field playable, improves drainage and reduces rough or uneven spots that can affect bounces, footing and safety. At a busy community sports venue like Bryan J. Baptiste, that kind of maintenance is often easiest to notice only after a field starts getting dusty, hard or rutted.

The closure also fits a broader pattern of county upkeep at the complex. In 2025, Kauai County closed the dual-use tennis and pickleball courts and the basketball courts at Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex for resurfacing from March 17 through September 2025. The county later said that work was part of its $3.1 million Playcourt Resurfacing Project, which also included Wailua Houselots Park and Puhi Park, with Pacific Concrete Cutting & Coring, Inc. named as the general contractor.

Kauai County says its Parks and Recreation Department operates and maintains county athletic fields, parks, playgrounds, stadiums, pavilions, neighborhood centers, public cemeteries and beautification areas. In Kapaa, that responsibility now means a brief shutdown aimed at keeping one of the East Side’s most used sports spaces safer and more dependable for the next round of games.
