Kaua‘i County Announces Holiday Closures, Essential Services Continue
On December 15 the County of Kaua‘i announced that most county offices and several public facilities will be closed on Thursday December 25 and Thursday January 1 in observance of the Christmas and New Year holidays, while key services including residential refuse collection and The Kaua‘i Bus will operate as normal. The schedule affects neighborhood centers, refuse transfer stations, recycling centers, and two public pools, and residents are advised to plan errands and disposal activities accordingly.

The County of Kaua‘i notified residents on December 15 that county offices will be closed Thursday December 25 and Thursday January 1 for the Christmas and New Year holidays. The closures include all neighborhood centers, all refuse transfer stations, the Kekaha Landfill, the Puhi Metals Recycling Center, the Līhu‘e HI5 Redemption Center and all other HI5 Redemption Centers, and the Waimea and Kapa‘a swimming pools. Regular business hours for county offices and services will resume Friday December 26 and Friday January 2.
Despite the holiday shutdowns of many facilities, residential refuse pick up will remain unchanged and The Kaua‘i Bus will operate on its regular schedule on both holidays. Residents with questions about transit operations can call 808 246 8110. For information about regular pool hours residents may call the Department of Parks and Recreation at 808 241 4460. For recycling and waste disposal questions the county provided 808 241 4841.
The announcement is designed to balance employee time off with continuity of core services. Maintaining residential refuse collection and bus service reduces public health and mobility risks that can arise when those services are interrupted. At the same time temporary closures of refuse transfer stations and recycling centers will narrow options for residents who plan to drop off materials or return HI5 containers on those specific dates.

Neighborhood centers often serve as community hubs for meetings, social services and civic engagement. Their temporary closure may affect scheduled gatherings, volunteer activities and outreach events during the holiday period. Residents who rely on those facilities for services or who planned to hold meetings there should contact the county or their neighborhood center ahead of the holidays to confirm schedules and to identify alternative arrangements.
The county statement gives clear contact points for questions and resumes normal operations the business day after each holiday, allowing residents and organizations to plan around the specified closures.
