Kauai County announces lane closures on South Shore roads this week

Single-lane closures will slow traffic on Poipū Road, Kōloa Road and Maluhia Road from July 20 to July 24, with work scheduled from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and weather permitting. For South Kauai drivers, the most congested stretch will be the morning commute and school-run window, when these roads carry daily trips between Kōloa, Poipū and the surrounding neighborhoods.

The County of Kauai issued the notice as NR 07-16-26 on July 16 and said the Department of Public Works will use single-lane closures along portions of the three roads. That means alternating traffic patterns and delays for anyone trying to move through the corridor during the daytime work window. The Roads Division Main Office listed 808-241-4847 and 808-241-4180 for residents who need to check on the schedule or follow up if weather shifts the timing.

The disruption will land hardest on the practical rhythms of South Shore life: drop-offs, deliveries, and work trips headed through Kōloa and into Līhue. Because the closure window runs from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., drivers will feel the tightest pinch early in the day and again around midday, when local businesses are moving goods and families are juggling appointments, errands and school transport. Weather permitting also means the county can push the work if conditions turn poor, adding another layer of uncertainty for regular commuters.

The July closures are not an isolated interruption. Kauai County has announced road work affecting Poipū Road, Kōloa Road and Maluhia Road before, and a county planning document lays out a longer-term Poipū Road Safety and Mobility Project that will install a mini roundabout at the intersection of Kōloa Road and Poipū Road. That project signals a broader effort to reshape traffic flow in one of South Kauai’s busiest road connections, even as short-term lane closures continue to test patience on the ground.
