Kaua‘i County announces Martin Luther King Jr. Day closures and service changes
County of Kaua‘i offices and select facilities will close Monday, Jan. 19; Kaua‘i Bus and residential refuse pickup will run as scheduled.

The County of Kaua‘i on Jan. 12 notified residents of closures and service adjustments for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which will be observed Monday, Jan. 19, 2026. County offices and a range of public facilities will be closed for the holiday, while essential services such as bus transit and regular curbside refuse collection will continue uninterrupted.
Closed Monday, Jan. 19 will be all neighborhood centers, the Puhi Metals Recycling Center, the Kekaha Landfill, HI5 redemption centers, and all refuse transfer stations. The announcement stressed that residential refuse pickup schedules will remain unchanged, so residents should still set out carts on their normal collection day. The Kaua‘i Bus will operate its regular holiday schedule, maintaining island-wide transit connections for commuters, shoppers, and visitors.
An exception to the Monday closures involves the Waimea and Kapa‘a community pools. Because those pools are normally closed on Mondays, staff will observe the holiday on Tuesday, Jan. 20 instead. As a result, both Waimea and Kapa‘a pools will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 20 and will reopen on their regular schedule thereafter.
The county directed residents seeking more information to departmental webpages and phone lines. For parks programming and neighborhood center inquiries, contact the Department of Parks and Recreation at kauai.gov/Parks or 808-241-4460. For Kaua‘i Bus and transportation questions, visit kauai.gov/transportation or call 808-246-8110. For recycling and waste disposal details, including landfill and transfer station hours, visit kauai.gov/recycling or call 808-241-4841.
For many Kaua‘i households, the holiday means planning around one-day interruptions to recycling and redemption services. Residents who rely on HI5 redemption centers or who had planned weekend drop-offs at transfer stations should reschedule those trips. Businesses that coordinate deliveries or contractor work with county facilities will also need to account for the closures.
Regular business hours for county offices and services will resume Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026. Residents should use the provided phone numbers and webpages for the latest updates and to confirm hours before traveling to county facilities over the holiday period.
