The biggest mistake Kauai residents could make on Memorial Day was assuming county services were running normally. County offices closed, along with neighborhood centers, all refuse transfer stations, the Kekaha Landfill, the Puhi Metals Recycling Center and all HI5 redemption centers, so in-person bill paying, waste drop-off and routine facility trips had to wait.

Kauai County said regular business hours would resume Tuesday, May 26. Waimea and Kapaa swimming pools also observed Memorial Day on Tuesday and were closed that day, a detail that matters for families lining up swim lessons, practice or a holiday outing.

Not every service stopped. Residential refuse pickup remained unchanged, so curbside customers did not need to alter their trash day just because county facilities were shut. The Kauai Bus also continued on its current daily schedule, keeping fixed-route service available for commuters and anyone needing to reach work, appointments or the airport corridor while county offices were closed.

The county’s Transportation Agency said the Kauai Bus runs fixed-route and paratransit service from Hanalei to Kekaha, with Monday-through-Saturday service from 5:15 a.m. to 9:45 p.m. That schedule helps explain why the county kept transit running through the holiday, even as most administrative counters and solid waste sites went dark.

For residents trying to sort out whether their trash was affected, the county’s refuse-collection lookup tool lets people check pickup by street name. The county also directed residents to its Parks, Transportation, Recycling and HI5 information lines for service questions before heading out.

The closure followed the county’s standard holiday calendar. The county’s events listing identified Memorial Day Holiday for May 25, 2026, and the same pattern was used in 2025, when offices closed Monday, May 26, while residential refuse pickup stayed unchanged and the Kauai Bus kept its regular schedule.

Kauai County Solid Waste Division repeated the closure notice for the landfill, transfer stations, Puhi Metals Recycling Center and HI5 bottle redemption centers, underscoring that the holiday shutdown was coordinated across departments rather than limited to the administration building in Līhue.
