With Kahu Sean Chun leading the blessing on Wednesday, March 25, the County of Kaua'i formally launched a $835,000 renovation of the Hanapēpē Baseyard, the Westside operations hub that keeps road crews, park workers, and ocean safety personnel in the field every day.

The Department of Public Works Roads Division hosted the ceremony, drawing county officials, staff, and project partners to the Hanapēpē facility. The gathering honored the start of construction and asked for protection and success for both the project and the workers who rely on the baseyard. Pacific Blue Construction holds the renovation contract.

The baseyard functions as a shared backbone for several county departments: the Department of Public Works, the Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Kaua'i Fire Department's Ocean Safety Bureau all stage field operations from the site. The planned upgrades are intended to improve coordination, efficiency, and safety for the crews who depend on the facility daily, though the county has not yet disclosed a detailed construction scope or completion timeline.

Mayor Derek Kawakami tied the investment directly to the demands placed on county workers in recent weeks. "A big mahalo to all of our county crews for their continued dedication and hard work," Kawakami said in a county release. "From the recent kona low storms to the many emergencies our island has faced, you've shown up time and time again."

In a separate statement, Kawakami framed the $835,000 expenditure as workforce infrastructure as much as physical infrastructure. "This project is about taking care of the people who take care of our island," he said. "Our baseyards are critical to daily operations, and investments like this strengthen the foundation of the work we do. While it may not always be visible, it directly supports the services our community depends on."

The funding source for the project and the expected construction timeline have not been released by the county.
