Kauai County Offices Close Thursday, March 26 for Prince Kūhiō Day
County offices, pools, and recycling centers closed today for Prince Kūhiō Day — but trash pickup and the Kaua'i Bus ran on normal schedules.

County of Kaua'i offices shut their doors today, Thursday, March 26, in observance of Prince Kūhiō Day, with closures extending to neighborhood centers, swimming pools, landfill operations, and recycling facilities across the island.
Beyond the main administrative offices, the closure list included all neighborhood centers, the Waimea and Kapa'a swimming pools, all refuse transfer stations, the Kekaha Landfill, the Puhi Metals Recycling Center, and the Līhu'e HI5 Redemption Center. Residents needing HI5 location details can visit kauai.gov/HI5.
Two essential services continued without interruption: residential refuse pick-up ran on its normal schedule, and The Kaua'i Bus operated its current daily routes. Regular business hours for county offices and services resumed Friday, March 27.
The holiday honors Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole, known as "The Citizen Prince," who advocated for the establishment of the Hawaiian Homes Commission and served as Hawaiʻi's representative in Congress.

Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami's office issued the closure notice on March 23, with Managing Director Reiko Matsuyama listed on the release. The county's announcement included a correction: an earlier version of the release had incorrectly identified March 27 as Thursday rather than Friday, the day normal operations were set to return.
Residents with questions about pool hours can contact the Department of Parks and Recreation at kauai.gov/Parks or by calling 808-241-4460. For Kaua'i Bus schedules and route information, visit kauai.gov/transportation or call 808-246-8110. Recycling and waste disposal inquiries can be directed to kauai.gov/recycling or 808-241-4841.
