Kauai County Shares April 2 Briefing on Storm Recovery, Infrastructure Updates

A full closure of Kūhiō Highway on Hanalei Hill took effect Monday as the County of Kauai's April 2 briefing confirmed that recovery from March's back-to-back Kona low storms remains unfinished across the island, with debris removal, road repairs, and damage documentation still active priorities for multiple departments.

The briefing, posted on kauai.gov and the county's Facebook page, consolidated updates from the Kauai Emergency Management Agency, Public Works, and the Department of Water. Mayor Derek Kawakami, who monitored river conditions throughout the storm response period, has kept crews focused on the Wailua and Hanalei corridors, where river levels were tracked against a 5-foot threshold that would trigger closure of Kūhiō Highway near the Hanalei Bridge. At the storm's peak, Ho'one Road and Kuai Road in Poipu were closed due to flooding, Puolo Road in Hanapepe was shut for debris cleanup, and Akemama Road in Lawai was restricted to local traffic. County crews also cleared a large tree off Menehune Road to restore access.

A portion of the Ke Ala Hele Makalae coastal path was shut for debris removal following the March storms. Residents planning to use the path should confirm current access conditions at kauai.gov before heading out.

Households that sustained storm damage can still file reports with KEMA through its website. Filing does not constitute an application for aid, but KEMA may share the information with nonprofit partners once assistance programs are designated. The agency can be reached at 808-241-1800. A statewide Disaster Case Management Program launched April 4, connecting storm-affected residents with 40 trained case managers who help assess needs and build individualized recovery plans. The initial rollout covers Oahu and Maui County, with support for Kauai expected to follow. The county's press releases page will carry confirmation once the program extends to the island.

Even as Kauai manages its own recovery, county personnel have been working alongside Maui's Emergency Operations Center, conducting preliminary damage assessments for residents, businesses, and infrastructure there. The cross-island deployment reflects the statewide scale of the March storms.

Separately, the Solid Waste Division relocated the scrap metal recycling bin at Kekaha Landfill to an area near the refuse drop-off location, a logistical shift residents should note before their next trip.

Those not yet enrolled in the county's emergency alert system can sign up at kauai.gov to receive direct notifications on future road closures, water system shutdowns, or severe weather events.
