Kauai County warns of early morning Ho'owili Road closure in Poipū

South Shore residents, workers and visitors heading to Poipū Beach Park, nearby resorts or Sunday services should plan around a 6 to 9 a.m. closure of Ho'owili Road on Sunday, July 26. The County of Kauai said the main entrance road to Poipū Beach Park will shut for the Kōloa Plantation Days Family Fun Run, and drivers should use Poipu Road and Pee Road instead.

The county’s traffic advisory turns an early-morning run into a practical travel issue for the Kōloa-Poipū corridor. Ho'owili Road is one of the key access points to the beach park, so even a short closure can affect beach traffic, resort shuttles, restaurant deliveries and commuters trying to get across the South Shore before midday. The county framed the disruption as temporary, but the timing leaves little room for anyone trying to make an early appointment, reach work, or get to the beach before the day heats up.

The closure also falls in the middle of a packed Kōloa Plantation Days traffic week. County notices on July 17 and July 21 flagged road closures in Kōloa on July 25 and temporary Kōloa Shuttle stop changes that same day, while the Kauai Police Department posted additional traffic advisories for Kōloa Plantation Days road closures on July 25 and July 26. Kauai Now also reported planned road closures tied to the festival parade on July 19, showing how the event continues to reshape travel across the South Shore.

That pattern is not new. County press-release results show earlier Kōloa Plantation Days parade advisories in 2023 and 2025, when the Historic Kōloa Plantation Days Parade again required traffic control in the same corridor. The July 26 closure fits that recurring festival footprint, with Ho'owili Road scheduled to reopen by about 9 a.m. after the Family Fun Run clears the area.
