Kauai District Health Office Open House Set for National Public Health Week
Free KDHO open house April 10 in Lihue offers a rare look inside public health work, including wastewater surveillance conducted amid March's intense weather events.

In the wake of intense weather that struck Kaua'i earlier this month, the Kaua'i District Health Office is opening its doors for a free public look at the prevention and monitoring work it has been conducting, including wastewater surveillance tracking disease trends across the island.
The open house is set for Friday, April 10, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at KDHO's office at 3040 Umi Street in Līhu'e, with no RSVP required. The event coincides with National Public Health Week, observed statewide from April 6 through 12 under the 2026 theme "Ready. Set. Action!"
Hawaiʻi Department of Health staff will run exhibits on KDHO programs and services; past open houses have featured booths on immunizations, environmental health, water quality, vector control, and family health resources. Preparedness information has also been a regular feature, a particularly relevant addition given the weather events that hit the island earlier this month. Activities and entertainment for all ages are planned, and staff will discuss public-health career opportunities for anyone considering joining KDHO's workforce on Kauaʻi.
Dr. Janet Berreman, KDHO's District Health Officer, said the week is an opportunity to make the office's year-round work visible to residents. "National Public Health Week lets us share with the public the many programs and services that DOH offers to enhance the well-being of our communities," Berreman said. "When we understand and support public health, all of us, from keiki to kūpuna, can work together to create opportunities to be healthy and thrive."
The midday schedule was designed to reach working families and older adults. Community organizations and volunteers are also welcome; KDHO has positioned the event as a networking opportunity for partners working on public-health issues across the island.
KDHO held the same gathering at 3040 Umi Street on April 11, 2025, under the National Public Health Week theme "It Starts Here," making this a recurring annual touchpoint between the office and the community it serves.
