Kauai DMV outage halts ID and license production; Monday appointments canceled
Kauai DMV equipment issues halted issuance of IDs and driver licenses, canceling Monday appointments and delaying services for residents.

Production of identification cards at the Līhuʻe Division of Motor Vehicles was suspended after equipment problems, forcing the office to halt issuance of driving permits, driver licenses, and state identification cards and prompting appointment cancellations for affected services.
The DMV announced staff were working with vendors to restore full functionality and had anticipated identification cards would become available Tuesday, January 25. The agency contacted appointment holders with bookings for Monday, January 26 via the online booking system to cancel appointments for driver’s license, commercial driver’s license, and state identification card services. Road tests were not affected and proceeded as scheduled.
The outage created immediate friction for residents who rely on timely ID processing for employment, travel, vehicle transactions, and other official business. Those holding appointments for in-person driving permit tests were offered an alternative: the DMV advised applicants may still complete the permit test online at KnowTo Drive Hawai'i, available at knowtodrive.com. Customers who already paid for road test services will have their payments held by the DMV and applied to their next appointment.
Other in-person services at the Līhuʻe DMV remained available despite the equipment failure. The office continued to handle motor vehicle services, ADA placards, and utility bill payments during the outage. For rescheduling, the DMV directed residents to rebook through the county portal at kauai.gov/DMV, and encouraged users with questions to visit the same site for updated information.
The interruption underscores the vulnerability of local services that depend on specialized equipment and vendor support. Delays in issuing physical ID cards can ripple through daily life on Kauai, where many residents require up-to-date identification for work certifications, airport travel, banking, and proof of age. Commercial drivers awaiting CDL documentation also face scheduling uncertainty if processing timelines shift.
For now, the DMV’s short-term mitigation focused on preserving scheduled road tests, redirecting permit test takers to an online option, and maintaining other motor vehicle operations to limit community disruption. Residents with canceled appointments should check the county DMV webpage to rebook and to confirm whether the card production systems have resumed normal operations.
What comes next for affected residents is practical: rebook through the Kauai County DMV site, retain receipts for any paid services, and consider the online KnowTo Drive Hawai'i option for permit testing. County officials said staff and vendors are working to restore full ID production, and updates will be posted to kauai.gov/DMV as they become available.
