Weke Road in Hanalei will see intermittent lane closures beginning March 17 as the County of Kaua'i's Department of Water, working alongside contractor Koga Engineering & Construction Inc., carries out scheduled road work through March 20. The closures will affect Weke Road and several adjacent streets, though specific operating hours and the names of the side streets involved were not detailed in the department's announcement.

The four-day project adds to a stretch of March road work that has kept Kaua'i motorists navigating construction from one end of the island to the other. During the week of March 7-13 alone, the Hawai'i Department of Transportation scheduled 19 separate lane closures on state roadways across Kaua'i, with Hanalei listed among the affected areas along the Highway 56/560 corridor.

In Līhu'e, a separate and longer-running DOW project is already well underway. The department and its contractor, Alpha Inc., are conducting nightly alternating one-lane closures on Kūhiō Highway (Route 56) between Hardy Street and Kali Road, and along Poinciana Street to Oxford Street, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on weeknights through September 15, 2026. That project, the Kūhiō Highway (Hardy-Oxford) Waterline Project, involves replacing water mainlines and upgrading aging infrastructure to meet current Water System Standards, including fire flow requirements. Within the affected sections, the center lane in both directions is closed at night, with only one lane open in each direction at a time. No left turns are permitted through the work area, and drivers are advised to use alternate routes.

Construction impacts for the Hardy-Oxford project include noise, vibration, dust, and occasional water service shutdowns. Motorists, pedestrians, and residents are directed to follow flaggers and posted signs. For questions about that project, contact Noah Carter of Alpha Inc. at 808-866-6042 or Scott Suga of the Department of Water at 808-245-5411. The department can also be reached by email at publicrelations@kauaiwater.org.

Elsewhere on the island earlier this month, state highway work included a full nightly closure of Kūhiō Highway (Route 560) between mile posts 0.3 and 1.2, near Hanalei Plantation Road and Ohiki Road in Princeville, for paving from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Waimea Canyon Drive (Route 550) saw a full daytime closure between mile posts 1.1 and 3.2, near Panini Place, for pavement reconstruction, while a partial intersection closure at Nawiliwili Road (Route 58) and Haleko Road restricted northbound traffic at mile post 1.8 for underground survey work tied to future sewer and waterline installation.

Lane closure schedules across all projects are subject to change without notice and remain weather permitting. A consolidated map of state roadway lane closures is available through the Hawai'i Department of Transportation online.
