Kauai High Student Council wins sixth straight national gold award
Kauai High’s student leaders kept a national gold streak alive, shaping freshman orientation, Japan exchange visits, and school spirit on the Līhue campus.

Kauai High School’s student government did more than collect another plaque this year. Its sixth straight National Gold Council of Excellence award points to a campus pipeline that helped run freshman orientation, registration day support, sister-school visits from Japan and senior recognition work on the Līhue campus on Lala Road.
The 2026 honor from the National Association of Student Councils was announced by Kauai High School Student Activities Coordinator Divina Plowman, who said the award reflected “the tireless work our students put in coordinating events and projects throughout the year.” Plowman said the gold streak “highlights the constant and intense behind-the-scenes work” the council carried through what she called “the busiest year by far,” while also thanking school administrators, staff, parents and the Kauai High community for their support.
For families and students, the result was visible in the daily rhythms of the school year. Student leaders helped welcome incoming freshmen, supported registration, hosted visiting students from a sister school in Japan, and organized senior recognition projects. They also built school spirit through inclusive assemblies, musician showcases and cultural May Day celebrations, giving the council a role in both logistics and the public life of the campus.

The award matters because it measures more than meeting attendance or a constitution on file. The National Association of Elementary School Principals, working with the American Student Council Association, says student councils are judged on community service, student leadership, citizenship and school spirit. NAESP describes that work as a training ground for democracy, civic participation, governance and elections, the same skills that Kauai High students put to use when they plan events and coordinate schoolwide projects.
The recognition also came during National Student Leadership Week, which ran April 20-24, 2026. NAESP recognized 47 student councils with the 2025 ASCA Student Council School of Excellence Award and 30 councils in 2024, underscoring how selective the national field remains. For Kauai High, six straight gold awards show a sustained student leadership culture, not a one-year spike, and a system that continues to shape how the school functions for students, staff and the wider Kauai community.
