Kauai lifts temporary trailer size limit at refuse stations
Bigger trailers are back at Kauai refuse stations, ending the 5-by-8-by-2-foot cap. Loads up to the 3/4-ton limit can now get in, if staff can safely handle them.

Kauai residents hauling bulky trash to county refuse transfer stations can bring bigger trailers again, a change that should cut down on split loads, extra fuel and wasted trips to the dump.
The County of Kauai Solid Waste Division said May 8 that it has lifted the temporary trailer size limit that had restricted haulers to trailers no larger than 5 feet by 8 feet by 2 feet. The updated guidance took effect immediately. Under the new rules, trailers carrying loads up to the ordinance-referenced 3/4-ton capacity are permitted, and trailers about 10 feet long may also be accepted if they can be safely maneuvered inside the facility.
The county said the smaller trailer cap was first put in place to support facility renovations and improve on-site safety. After reviewing current conditions and community needs, officials decided the limit was no longer needed. The key guardrail remains the same: trailers that clearly exceed the 3/4-ton capacity in Kauai County Code Section 21-3.1, or cannot be safely operated in designated receiving areas, can still be turned away at the discretion of on-site staff.

That matters for residents and small operators who rely on transfer stations for household cleanouts, yard debris, renovation waste and other material that does not fit curbside pickup. The county’s latest move should make it easier to haul a full load at once instead of breaking the job into multiple trips or finding different equipment.
The policy also reverses a tighter March 12 restriction, when the county had limited trailers to 5 feet wide by 2 feet high by 8 feet long and barred trailers longer than 8 feet. At that time, the county said side walls could not be added to increase hauling capacity, and the dimensions were meant to match the maximum allowable load equivalent to a 3/4-ton pickup truck under county ordinance.

The change comes as the county’s transfer-station system continues to work through renovation and reopening cycles, including work at the Kapaa Refuse Transfer Station. For residents using alternate sites, the county lists the Līhue Refuse Transfer Station at 3450 Ahukini Road and the Hanalei Refuse Transfer Station at 5-3751 Kūhiō Highway. Refuse transfer stations generally operate from 7:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., seven days a week except county holidays.
County officials said the Solid Waste Division will keep evaluating facility conditions and procedures and will notify the public of future updates, but for now the message is simple: bigger trailers are back, as long as they can be handled safely on site.
