Kauai Offers Multiple Drop Off Sites for Live Christmas Trees
Kaua‘i County reminded residents today that real Christmas trees may be recycled at island drop off locations, with transfer stations accepting trees daily and a private nursery offering seven day service. Proper disposal reduces pressure on landfills and supports county waste management goals, residents are advised to remove flocking, tinsel, stands and ornaments before drop off.

Kaua‘i County issued a public notice on December 25, 2025 informing residents that live Christmas trees may be recycled at several green waste drop off locations across the island. Hanalei, Hanapēpē, Kapa‘a and Līhu‘e transfer stations accept trees daily from 7:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. except on holidays, and the Kekaha Landfill is accepting trees from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Kaua‘i Nursery and Landscaping in Puhi is providing a seven day drop off service with a truck on site.
Trees must be cleared of flocking, tinsel, stands and ornaments before delivery, and county green waste sites will close during inclement weather. The county advised residents to consult the official county website for additional details and any schedule updates. The notice is intended to help households dispose of holiday trees responsibly and to limit organic material entering the municipal landfill system.
The immediate effect for residents is practical and financial. Delivering untreated trees to green waste facilities diverts bulky organic material from Kekaha Landfill where space and operational costs are persistent concerns. For households without curbside green waste pickup, island transfer stations and the private drop off option in Puhi provide nearby choices that reduce the need for disposal in regular trash and may extend landfill lifespan.

Policy implications extend to county planning and budgeting for solid waste services. Continued public participation in tree recycling can alter volumes of green waste the county must process, potentially influencing future investments in composting, hauling contracts and landfill operations. County officials and the Kaua‘i County Council will track seasonal trends to inform those decisions, and residents who prioritize waste management can bring concerns and proposals to council meetings or during election cycles.
The county notice underscores civic responsibility in daily environmental practices, and the logistics provided aim to make compliance straightforward. Properly prepared trees accepted at designated sites support local waste reduction objectives and help preserve landfill capacity for essential services.
