Kauai Water Department Offers Water Saving Toilets to Residents
To mark World Toilet Day on Nov. 19, the Kauai Department of Water launched a giveaway of three WaterSense certified toilets, with entries accepted through the end of November. The initiative aims to reduce household water use, support local conservation efforts, and connect island residents and organizations with efficient fixtures that can lower water consumption and bills.

The Kauai Department of Water marked World Toilet Day on Nov. 19 by announcing a contest to give away three water saving toilets recognized by WaterSense, a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency program that certifies water efficient products. Entries are being accepted at the DOW business office lobby, 4398 Pua Loke St., during normal business hours through the end of November, and a grand prize drawing is scheduled for Dec. 1.
The sweepstakes is open to Kauai households, businesses, schools, and organizations, with a limit of one entry per household or entity. Applicants must be 19 years or older and winners are required to arrange pick up and delivery of the prize. For more information residents may call the department at 808 245 5461 or email publicrelations@kauaiwater.org.
Officials point to toilets as the single largest household water user, representing around 30 percent of total household water consumption. By promoting WaterSense certified models that perform as well as or better than conventional toilets while using less water, the department hopes to reduce demand on local water supplies and lower consumer bills. For island communities where freshwater resources are finite and seasonal conditions can strain delivery systems, small reductions across many homes and institutions can have meaningful cumulative effects.

The giveaway ties a local conservation effort to an international awareness day that highlights sanitation challenges and serious health consequences in developing countries. While Kauai faces different realities from regions without adequate sanitation, the global focus underscores common themes of public health, resource stewardship, and infrastructure resilience. Encouraging efficient fixtures in homes, schools, and businesses aligns local action with broader efforts by national and international agencies to improve water use efficiency.
As entries remain open through the end of November residents and organizations interested in participating should visit the DOW lobby during business hours. The Dec. 1 drawing will determine the three winners who will receive WaterSense certified toilets intended to cut household water use and support ongoing county conservation goals.
