High school courts and pools across Kaua‘i were active last weekend as basketball, swimming and wrestling events engaged student-athletes, while soccer registration deadlines and a coaching opening pointed to the busy season ahead.

On Friday night, Jan. 23, boys high school basketball games took place with Waimea visiting Kaua‘i High and Island School visiting Kapa‘a. Junior varsity matchups began at 5:30 p.m., with varsity games scheduled to follow 20 minutes after the JV contests ended. The scheduling pattern aimed to give players from smaller rosters more warm-up and recovery time between games.

Saturday, Jan. 24, featured a full slate of girls and boys contests and a swimming qualifier. Waimea hosted Kapa‘a for a girls varsity game at 6:30 p.m. The Red Raiders also hosted Island School at the Baptiste Sports Complex, where junior varsity action started at 10 a.m. and the girls varsity game kicked off at 11:45 a.m. A boys varsity game between Waimea and Island School was scheduled for 4 p.m. At the YMCA pool, qualifying meet number 4 for high school swimmers began at 8 a.m., giving athletes another opportunity to secure times for postseason competition.

Wrestling returned to the Waimea High Gym on Saturday with KIF competition beginning at 10 a.m., keeping grapplers on the mat and local programs active in the lead-up to league tournaments.

Sign-up and administrative items carried significant implications for teams and families. The HYSA competitive spring season team entry deadline was Jan. 24. Teams that missed the deadline should contact the Kaua‘i Soccer Association through kauaisoccerassociation.com for next steps and to learn about late-entry options or wait lists.

Looking ahead, Kaua‘i High is recruiting a head track and field coach. Interested applicants should submit resumes to Athletic Director Keli‘i Morgado at Kaua‘i High School, 35-77 Lala Road, Līhu‘e 96766. The application window closes Jan. 30, leaving a brief timeframe to apply and help shape opportunities for student-athletes this spring.

These programs do more than fill schedules. Organized youth sports support physical fitness, mental health and social connections for young people island-wide, and staffing vacancies or missed deadlines can shrink access for students who rely on school and community athletics. Sponsorship from Wilcox Health continues to underline the link between community health systems and youth activity.

For coaches, parents and program coordinators with updates, schedules or fundraisers, send information to KauaiSports@PMGhawaii.com so local teams can stay connected. As the season progresses, attendance at games and meets, timely coaching hires and responsive registration efforts will determine how broadly Kaua‘i students benefit from competitive and recreational sports this spring.
