Lydgate Beach Park Campground Reopens April 2 After Weather-Delayed Maintenance
Lydgate Beach Park's campground reopens today after 31 days — 11 more than planned — of weather-extended closure, restoring 31 numbered campsites on Kauai's east side.

Inclement weather that struck Kauaʻi's east side in mid-March extended a scheduled maintenance closure at Lydgate Beach Park by 11 days, locking permit holders out of 31 designated campsites through the end of the month. Those sites, along with the Bynum (Kamalani Kai) Bridge, the Group Camping Pavilion, and the fishing access area, reopened today after a 31-day shutdown that began March 2.
The County of Kauaʻi Department of Parks and Recreation, under Deputy Director Preston Chong, had closed the campground area March 2 for a planned three weeks of cleaning, grounds maintenance, and facility repairs. The work was on track to wrap by March 22, but wet conditions pushed the timeline into April, displacing permit holders who had reserved late-March stays at Kauaʻi's only county campground with numbered, pre-assigned sites.
Lydgate sits adjacent to the Wailua River between Kapaʻa and Līhuʻe, and its campground draws local families, fishing groups, and visitors using the east side as a base. The 11-day overrun meant tour operators, rental outfitters, and families with itineraries built around Lydgate's assigned sites had to rebook or absorb the gap. No comparable county campground on the east corridor exists as an alternative, making the delay a hard stop rather than a detour for affected permit holders.
The Department announced the revised April 2 reopening date on March 30, giving permit holders two days of notice. Lydgate's standard weekly maintenance rotation, which closes the campground every Tuesday at 10 a.m. and reopens it Thursday at noon, resumes under normal schedule beginning this week.
The Department of Parks and Recreation can be reached at 808-241-4460 or parks@kauai.gov for permit information and any last-minute site updates.
