Pe‘e Road closure at Po‘ipū Road intersection set for April 13-17

Drivers, delivery trucks and visitors moving through Po‘ipū faced a five-day shutdown at Pe‘e Road and Po‘ipū Road, where the County of Kaua‘i scheduled a closure from April 13 through April 17, weather permitting. The Department of Public Works coordinated the work with Goodfellow Bros. LLC after recent severe weather delayed construction, and the county routed traffic down Ho‘owili to Ho‘one Road before reconnecting with Pe‘e Road.

The detour was meant to preserve access to the south side of Pe‘e Road, but the closure still had the potential to slow commutes, complicate pickups and drop-offs, and disrupt deliveries across the Po‘ipū corridor. The county asked residents, businesses and visitors to be patient as crews worked to keep the project moving and limit disruption to the surrounding community. Questions about the closure were directed to Goodfellow Bros. LLC.

The shutdown was part of a larger set of changes tied to the Po‘ipū Road Safety and Mobility Project, a more than $70 million overhaul that began with a community visioning process in 2013 and was added to the South Kaua‘i Community Plan in 2015. County officials said the project includes three new roundabouts, continuous bicycle lanes, new sidewalks, crosswalks, bus stops with shelters and turn-only lanes. The county said sidewalks will run continuously on at least one side of the full length of Po‘ipū Road, linking Kōloa Elementary School to nearby residences, including Koa‘e Makana Affordable Housing, and connecting Po‘ipū resorts with restaurants and other businesses.

Continuous bike lanes are planned for the full length of Po‘ipū Road except for the Hyatt frontage, part of a redesign officials say will improve safety and access along one of South Kaua‘i’s busiest corridors. Construction on the project is scheduled for completion by December 2027.

The Pe‘e Road closure also followed earlier traffic changes in the same area. County officials had previously said Pe‘e Road at Po‘ipū Road would be closed through April 10, and on March 14 said the intersection was open through Monday after an earlier construction shutdown. Separate single-lane closures on Ala Kinoiki Way ran from February 17 through April 17, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for road widening and a left-turn lane, leaving Po‘ipū with multiple work zones at once as the county pushed ahead with long-delayed corridor improvements.
