Southbound traffic on Kūhiō Highway is being diverted off the Wailua Mauka Bridge every night through April 3, as Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation crews complete concrete repairs on the span at mile posts 5.7 to 5.9. The detour, running 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly from March 30 through the end of the week, channels southbound drivers onto the Wailua Plantation Bridge, adding distance and potential queuing to one of the island's busiest north-south crossings.

That bridge work is one of at least four overlapping closures now active across Kauaʻi's primary routes. The Kapaʻa Bypass Road (Route 5600), the alternate corridor many drivers use to avoid Kūhiō Highway congestion through central Kapaʻa, is itself completely shut overnight for paving between mile posts 0.8 and 3 every night from March 29 through April 3. The two simultaneous closures effectively eliminate the main contingency route for anyone moving between Wailua and Kapaʻa during the overnight window.

On Kaumualiʻi Highway (Route 50), crews are working multi-night closures between mile posts 2.9 and 8.5, the corridor running roughly from Kīpū to Ōmaʻo, for rumble-strip installation and new lane striping. That work runs Sunday, March 29 through Thursday, April 2, also from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., restricting the primary route used by residents and freight traffic linking Līhuʻe to the South Shore. Near the Līhuʻe center, nightly lane closures on Kūhiō Highway between mile posts 0.1 and 0.4 are tied to utility and waterline work, adding another restriction point along the corridor that feeds traffic into the island's commercial hub.

Taken together, the four primary closure zones account for more than 120 collective closure hours across Kauaʻi's backbone routes by the time the schedule wraps April 3. The DOT bulletin extends further north as well, listing additional single-lane closures for grass-cutting, paving, and general maintenance across segments from Keālia to Anahola and from Kīlauea to Princeville, spanning the full length of the east and north corridors.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation scheduled the bulk of the work in overnight windows to minimize disruption during peak commuter and visitor hours. Drivers are advised to follow posted detours, observe temporary speed limits, and check the HIDOT website and county traffic channels for any last-minute schedule changes caused by weather or emergency repairs before heading out each evening.
