High winds prompted the Department of Parks and Recreation to close the Wailua Golf Course on Feb. 2, 2026 as a safety measure during a National Weather Service high-wind advisory. The closure removed play and public access to the course on Kūhiō Highway that day and underscores ongoing hazards tied to gusty winds and coastal conditions.

“The Department of Parks and Recreation closed the Wailua Golf Course on Feb. 2, 2026, as a safety precaution during a National Weather Service high-wind advisory (south–southwest winds 20–30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph).” The advisory described south to southwest winds with sustained speeds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts up to 50 mph, and officials noted the advisory was in effect “through 6 a.m. Tuesday.” The county release directed the public to contact the Department of Parks and Recreation for more information.

The temporary shutdown interrupted bookings and on-course services at the municipal facility at 3-5350 Kuhio Highway. Course rules on the county page remain in force: “Heads up! Reservations are required all day now. No walk-ons allowed.” The site also notes that “All players must be signed in at the Registration Office before playing.” Visitors should also note posted food-service conditions: “The restaurant and snack shop are closed until further notice.” The course page advises: “Golfers are encouraged to bring their own food/snacks and non-alcoholic beverage(s). Limited selections may be available at the Pro Shop.”

Wailua Municipal Golf Course is a longstanding community asset, first built as a nine-hole layout in the 1930s with a second nine added in 1961 and designed by Toyo Shirai. The facility lists a full complement of amenities including a Golf Shop, locker room with showers, driving range, putting green, chipping green, practice bunker and an ATM. The county’s published hole yardages and pars for the back nine are listed as follows:

The closure at Wailua came amid broader weather impacts across the state that temporarily shuttered parks, recycling operations and county service centers, and prompted officials to warn of hazardous coastal conditions. A weather alert instructed: “Stay away from the shoreline along the affected coasts. Be prepared for road closures. Postpone entering or leaving channels affected by the high surf until the surf subsides.”

What this means for readers: anticipate altered operations at Wailua Golf Course while gusty conditions remain a risk, confirm reservations and tee times before traveling, and follow official advisories for shoreline safety and potential road closures as county crews assess conditions and schedule reopenings.
