Waimea Canyon Drive Closed for Resurfacing Between Panini Place and MP 3.2
HDOT will fully close Waimea Canyon Drive between Panini Place and mile post 3.2 for resurfacing March 2–6, 8 a.m.–3:30 p.m.; Kōkeʻe Road detours will route park traffic.

Daily Full Closure of Waimea Canyon Drive begins Monday, March 2," the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation announced, closing Route 550 between Panini Place and mile post 3.2 from Monday, March 2 through Friday, March 6 between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. HDOT said the daytime shutdown is necessary for the contractor to finish pavement reconstruction and resurfacing of Waimea Canyon Drive.
HDOT also set a follow-up schedule for striping: "There will be a single lane closure from March 9 to March 31, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., for striping. Alternating traffic will be directed in the open lane." Variable message boards have been posted, HDOT added, and work is weather permitting.
Traffic needing to access Kōkeʻe State Park will be detoured to Kōkeʻe Road, HDOT and KauaiNow reported, and local traffic will be allowed through during closure windows while through traffic will be restricted. HawaiiNewsNow expanded the routing detail for Kekaha drivers, listing both Alae Road and Kōkeʻe Road as detour options and reporting that detour-related traffic modifications may continue through April with weekday detour hours cited as 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. The County of Kauaʻi Department of Public Works Engineering Division phone is (808) 241-4883 for county-level traffic concerns; HDOT Public Affairs can be reached at 808-587-2160.
Visitors should expect extra driving time and some lost roadside access. KauaiMagazine warned that the popular roadside attraction will be affected in this stretch: "No Access to Red Dirt Falls During Closure" and noted the waterfall "sits directly within the affected section of Waimea Canyon Drive" and "will not be accessible during the daily closure hours, from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., throughout the construction period." That 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. window differs from HDOT’s March 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. timeframe; BeatofHawaii likewise advised visitors that "the canyon drive most visitors use is not available during regular weekday daylight hours" on earlier reported schedules and said, "Anyone who has driven these roads recently can see why repairs are needed. The potholes have been very dangerous and unpredictable, especially when driving after dark."

On-site traffic control measures will include posted signage and variable message boards noted by HDOT and KauaiNow, with HawaiiNewsNow reporting that flaggers and traffic-control signs will assist traffic flow as needed. KauaiMagazine recommended allowing additional minutes for the mandatory detour via Kōkeʻe Road in Kekaha, saying the alternate route will add "a few extra miles and several additional minutes" to drives to Waimea Canyon and Kōkeʻe State Park.
Reports across outlets contained differing earlier schedules and hours; HDOT’s news release should be treated as the official current schedule. Because hours and detour routing have varied in other accounts, travellers and managers of tour operations should confirm conditions with HDOT Public Affairs at 808-587-2160 or the County DPW at (808) 241-4883 before planning weekday visits while crews complete the resurfacing work.
