Walmart will host a free health and wellness event at its Līhuʻe store on Jan. 24, providing no-cost screenings, immunizations and wellness resources aimed at expanding access to preventive care on Kauaʻi. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Līhuʻe location, 3-3300 Kuhio Highway, and is open to the public with no registration required; walk-ins are welcome.

Pharmacists, vision specialists and wellness staff at the store will offer free blood pressure checks, body mass index measurements and complimentary vision screenings. Walmart will also provide no-cost flu shots, which are covered by most major insurance plans, along with low-cost immunizations for RSV, shingles, tetanus and HPV. Pharmacists will be available to offer personalized guidance on medications, nutrition and general wellness during the visit. Participants may also receive curated wellness sample boxes containing nutritious snacks, vitamins and supplements while supplies last.

The Līhuʻe event is part of a statewide rollout across all nine Walmart stores in Hawaiʻi and the company’s nationwide Wellness Event. Kevin Host, senior vice president of pharmacy at Walmart, said in a press release, "With convenient, trusted care and everyday wellness solutions, we’re committed to meeting people where they are and supporting their health goals in practical, affordable ways." The annual event, held since 2014, has provided more than 5 million free health screenings nationwide, and Walmart described the Jan. 24 initiative as an effort to promote preventive care at the start of the year. "A fresh year brings fresh motivation, and The Wellness Event is our way of helping customers turn that motivation into meaningful action," Host said.

For Kauaʻi residents, the event addresses persistent gaps in access to basic health services in rural and island communities. Local clinics and public health programs often face capacity and transportation constraints, and a free, walk-in option at a central retail site can lower logistical barriers for people juggling work, caregiving and limited clinic hours. Immunization access is particularly important during respiratory virus season; offering flu shots and low-cost vaccines for RSV and other illnesses may reduce community transmission and prevent hospital visits.

The event also touches on broader policy and equity issues: leveraging retail pharmacies to deliver preventive care can expand reach but does not replace investments in sustained primary care, mobile clinics and community-based outreach that many advocates say are needed on Kauaʻi. Still, the Līhuʻe event provides an immediate, practical opportunity for residents to get screenings and vaccines in a familiar setting.

Residents planning to attend should expect services between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Līhuʻe Walmart and may bring insurance information for flu shot coverage. The event offers a short-term boost in preventive care access and a reminder that routine screenings and immunizations remain central to community health.
