Bayview readies annual communitywide yard sale with maps, donations available

Bayview turned itself into a one-day marketplace Saturday as the annual communitywide yard sale drew shoppers to about 20 homes and to the Bayview Community Center, where hundreds of items were offered from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Maps were available at the community center at 20298 E. Perimeter Rd. to help visitors find the homes taking part in the sale. The center also served as a sale site of its own, giving the fundraiser a fixed stop in the middle of a townwide event that spread across the lakeside community.

Donations could be dropped off at the community center on Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. or Saturday morning, a setup that made the yard sale as much about clearing out garages and sheds as it was about attracting bargain hunters. The Bayview Community Council supported the fundraiser, tying the event directly to the town’s volunteer network.

That matters in Bayview, where the community center is more than a meeting hall. The Bayview Chamber of Commerce says the building was completed in 1995 by local volunteers after the former gathering place, the Bayview Schoolhouse, was condemned. The project was first conceived in 1991, and more than $288,000 in donated cash and labor went into getting it built. The center opened to the public on June 30, 1995, and today it operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit funded by rentals, fundraising events and charitable donations.

The sale also fit the rhythm of Bayview itself, a small lakeside town on the southern shore of Lake Pend Oreille, about 30 miles north of Coeur d’Alene and about 30 miles south of Sandpoint. Bayview’s summer calendar often brings more people into town, and the yard sale gave visitors another reason to stop in as the season began.

The setting gives the event a wider reach than a simple neighborhood cleanup. Bayview sits near Farragut State Park and on the edge of Lake Pend Oreille, whose deep, quiet waters also support the U.S. Navy’s Acoustic Research Detachment. In a town with a modest year-round population, the yard sale helped convert porches, driveways and the community center into a temporary local market, with the volunteer-run center at the center of it all.
