A woman was pulled from a burning two-story home in the early hours of Friday and taken to Kootenai Health with life‑threatening injuries, authorities said. Several other occupants escaped without injury, and detectives and fire marshals are continuing the investigation.

"On January 30, 2026, at approximately 1:20 a.m., the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a structure fire with possible trapped occupants in the 1300 block of N. American Dr., near the City of Post Falls," the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office wrote in its media release. "Sheriff’s deputies and Kootenai County Fire and Rescue arrived on scene and found a residence fully engulfed in flames."

Neighbors reported hearing a scream just before crews arrived. "We live right next door and we heard a scream right before the fire trucks arrived, it must have been about 1:15," neighbor Angelena Chesney told a local reporter. Deputies and firefighters found several people outside the home and were told another occupant was missing. Firefighters later located the missing female at the rear of the residence, and she was transported to Kootenai Health, officials said. "We did find someone who was injured in the fire, and that patient was taken and treated at Kootenai Health," Deputy Fire Marshal Seth Hohenstreet said.

Kootenai County Fire & Rescue arrived alongside sheriff’s deputies and found the house fully engulfed, with flames visible from a lower front window, according to scene descriptions. Fire crews from the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department and Northern Lakes Fire District provided mutual aid, and Idaho State Fire Marshals were on site to examine the scene. Hohenstreet added, "We are very grateful for our mutual aid partners."

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office listed the incident as report number 26-03943. Firefighters had the blaze under control by about 1:45 a.m. and remained on scene to extinguish hotspots. No estimate of structural damage or a determination of cause has been released; detectives and fire marshals will continue the inquiry.

For residents of Post Falls and surrounding Kootenai County neighborhoods, the incident underscores the speed at which residential fires can escalate and the importance of working smoke alarms, clear escape routes and up-to-date contact information for emergency notifications. Local mutual aid relationships again proved critical for rapid response to a fully engulfed residence, a reminder of how regional cooperation supports smaller fire districts.

Officials have not released the injured woman’s name, age or a medical update beyond the initial transport. Investigators have not identified a cause and have not indicated whether the structure is a total loss. Follow-up reporting will seek additional information on the victim’s condition, the fire’s origin and any community safety guidance from Kootenai County Fire & Rescue.
