The Greensferry Road overpass above Interstate 90 in Post Falls enters the first of many overnight work windows at 8 p.m. tonight, as Idaho Transportation Department crews begin repairs scheduled to run through mid-June.

The work covers bridge fencing and railings, and the driving surface will be sealed. "All work impacting traffic is planned to take place at night between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. to keep daytime disruptions to a minimum," ITD said in a release authored by Heather McDaniel. No daytime lane closures on Greensferry Road are expected. The bridge carries two lanes of traffic in each direction with sidewalks on both sides; pedestrians may be directed to one side during active overnight work.

Drivers approaching the intersections on either side of the bridge, at Seltice Way and Mullan Avenue, should expect some nighttime adjustments to traffic patterns throughout the construction period. Any detours or alternate routes will be clearly posted, ITD said.

The impact extends below the overpass as well. Nighttime single-lane closures on I-90 beneath the Greensferry structure are expected throughout the entire project, a condition that will affect freight carriers, night-shift workers, and commuters traveling between Post Falls, Coeur d'Alene, and Spokane after dark.

Once the Post Falls project wraps by mid-June, crews will shift to the SH-41/SH-53 exchange bridge over the railroad tracks in Rathdrum. That work is expected to start somewhere between June and July, running through late fall. Drivers in Rathdrum should plan for nighttime lane closures on the bridge and at adjacent intersections, along with pedestrian detours.

ITD framed the sequenced projects as preventive maintenance: the repairs aim to extend the service life and safety of both bridges, heading off more disruptive emergency closures later in the season. Deferring work on aging fencing, railings, and driving surfaces risks exactly the kind of unplanned, no-notice closures that give commuters, freight operators, and first responders no time to reroute.

Local governments and first-responder agencies were notified in advance. Businesses dependent on overnight freight through either corridor should plan for potential delays during the nightly 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. windows. For real-time lane closure and detour updates, check Idaho 511.
