Kootenai County Approves Emergency Repairs to Gould's Landing Dock Before Boating Season
Kootenai County will fast-track emergency repairs to the damaged Gould's Landing dock so a replacement can be installed before boating season, restoring lake access and shoreline safety.

Kootenai County is fast-tracking emergency repairs to the dock at Gould’s Landing on Lake Coeur d’Alene after a December windstorm caused significant structural damage and pushed the dock beyond its useful life expectancy. County commissioners unanimously approved the emergency classification in late December, clearing the way for expedited work without the county’s usual formal bidding requirements.
Wind gusts during the December storm were recorded at up to 66 mph at the Coeur d’Alene Airport, contributing to the level of destruction county inspectors found at the landing. Kootenai County Parks and Waterways has placed the Gould’s Landing project among a string of storm-related repairs the department is addressing across county-managed sites.
County Parks and Waterways Director Nick Snyder said marine contractors will be brought in and the county aims to install a new dock before boating season. That timetable makes Gould’s Landing a priority because the dock serves local boaters, anglers and residents who use the lake for recreation and shoreline access. Restoring a safe, functional dock will also reduce pressure on nearby launches that see heavy use once warmer weather arrives.
The emergency declaration allows county officials to proceed without the standard competitive bidding process, a step managers described as necessary to meet a compressed schedule and to respond to immediate safety concerns. The move raises questions about oversight and cost controls, but county leaders defended the decision as a balance between urgent public safety needs and procurement protocols.
For residents, the most immediate impact will be temporary loss of access at Gould’s Landing during repair and replacement work. Boaters planning early-season outings should be prepared for closures and altered access points. Local businesses that depend on lake traffic could also see short-term effects if boat launching is disrupted, though a timely replacement dock is intended to limit economic impact.
The Parks and Waterways Department will coordinate with marine contractors on removal of damaged materials and installation of the new structure. County officials have not released a detailed construction timeline or contractor names as bids are being handled under the emergency procurement rules.
Kootenai County’s accelerated repair of Gould’s Landing underscores the county’s broader challenge of responding to increasingly severe weather impacts while maintaining transparency and fiscal responsibility. Residents should monitor county announcements for closure notices and project updates as work moves forward and the county prepares for the 2026 boating season.
