Correctional staff at the Kootenai County Jail pre-made meals, monitored inmates throughout the morning, and kept essential services running during a deliberate facility-wide power shutdown on April 7, as crews installed a replacement generator to retire the building's decades-old backup system.

The outage, carried out under the supervision of Kootenai County Sheriff's Office personnel and jail staff, went without incident. County officials reported that "no issues arose" during the work.

The coordination required to pull off a planned outage at an operating detention facility is considerable. Backup power at a jail underpins nearly every critical system: locked doors, HVAC, video surveillance, fire suppression, communications, and medical services all depend on electricity. Pre-making meals addressed one of the more immediate logistical challenges, ensuring inmates were fed without relying on kitchen equipment that would be offline during the swap.

The Board of County Commissioners had authorized the generator purchase in October 2025. Installation was timed for spring 2026 to take advantage of seasonal conditions that reduce operational risk. County officials acknowledged the commissioners for approving the equipment through the county's capital planning and inspection process.

Aging backup generators expose detention facilities to serious vulnerabilities during utility outages, severe weather events, or unscheduled maintenance; a failure at the wrong moment can force emergency inmate transfers and strain county resources. Kootenai County has seen its share of extreme weather events in recent years, making infrastructure resilience at critical facilities a practical rather than theoretical concern.

With the new generator in place, the jail is positioned to handle future power interruptions without the uncertainty that comes with decades-old equipment nearing the end of its service life.
