A horse was found shot dead north of Rathdrum, and Kootenai County deputies are treating the case as animal cruelty while looking for anyone who saw suspicious activity near a rural property line.

Investigators say the killing likely happened between April 22 and April 23 near North Hamilton Court, north of Rathdrum, Idaho. The horse was a 1-year-old American Quarter Horse, and investigators described an apparent gunshot wound to the chest. No suspects have been identified.

Authorities said one or more unknown suspects may have entered the property illegally, or fired onto it illegally, possibly using a motorized vehicle. That detail has made the case more than a single loss for one owner: it raises a broader public-safety concern for rural landowners who rely on distance, fences and quiet roads to protect livestock and property.

Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control is handling the livestock side of the investigation. The unit operates under the sheriff’s Operations Bureau and has three Animal Control Officers, who work cases involving cats, dogs and livestock. The Idaho State Department of Agriculture says local sheriffs are the primary contact for concerns involving horses and other non-production animals.

Under Idaho law, officers can take possession of an animal that has been cruelly treated during an investigation and provide care until the case is resolved. Idaho law also makes certain conduct involving horses a felony, including altering or defacing a horse’s brand with the intent to steal or block identification.

Deputies are asking anyone with information about activity in the North Hamilton Court area during the April 22 to April 23 window to contact the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office. In a county where horses, acreage and outbuildings sit close to public roads, a single shooting can leave neighbors wondering what else may have happened out of view.
