Lake City softball rallies past Coeur d’Alene, wins district title, reaches state
Brooklyn Caan’s two-out single in the seventh sent Lake City past Coeur d’Alene 9-8, completing a district title sweep and sending the Timberwolves back to state.

Brooklyn Caan delivered the biggest swing of Lake City’s season when it mattered most. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, the sophomore lined a hit to right-center field to score KaeLee Kolden from third, lifting the Timberwolves past Coeur d’Alene 9-8 on Monday and sealing the 6A District 1 championship series.
The walk-off hit capped a comeback from an 8-6 deficit and completed a sweep of the best-of-3 series. Lake City had already taken Game 1, 5-3, on Saturday at Coeur d’Alene High’s Larry Schwenke Field, then finished the job at home in a game that swung back and forth before the Timberwolves found a final answer under pressure.
Lake City’s path to the district title was built on resilience. The Timberwolves led early in the series opener, then watched Coeur d’Alene take control with a five-run fifth inning in Game 2 and carry an 8-6 edge into the final frame. But Lake City answered with timely hitting, smart baserunning and poise at the end, turning one of the season’s most important moments into a celebration on its home field.
Caan was central throughout the series. In Game 1, she went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored, including a two-run double that helped Lake City build an 8-6 lead. Her bat again decided the outcome in the finale, this time with the district title on the line and state within reach.
The victory sent Lake City to state for the first time since 2019, a significant step for a program in coach Jordyn Hensley’s fourth year leading the team. It also gave the Timberwolves a breakthrough against a Coeur d’Alene program that had won all four of the teams’ Inland Empire League regular-season meetings before the postseason and had been unbeaten in league play.

For Coeur d’Alene, the loss closed the door on a fifth straight state tournament trip. Bobbi Darretta’s Vikings, ranked sixth in 6A, will head to a state play-in game at McCall-Donnelly. Lake City, ranked fifth by MaxPreps in championship coverage, now waits to learn its first-round opponent.
The 2026 Idaho High School Activities Association 6A state tournament is scheduled for May 14-16 at Coeur d’Alene and Lake City high schools, with play-in games set for May 9. Lake City reaches that stage after beating Post Falls 16-10 in the loser-out round and then outlasting its biggest rival in a district final that hinged on one two-out swing.
