Officer-involved crash in Rathdrum sends two to hospital
A Rathdrum officer and a civilian were taken to Kootenai Health after a crash at Highway 41 and Lancaster Road. Idaho State Police are now handling the investigation.

A Rathdrum police officer and a civilian were taken by ambulance to Kootenai Health after a crash at Highway 41 and Lancaster Road that happened at about 2:58 p.m. Sunday in Rathdrum.
The Rathdrum Police Department said the officer was involved in the collision while responding to a call for service. KREM reported that both drivers were transported to Kootenai Health, and that after being evaluated, the officer was treated and released. The condition of the civilian driver was not available in the initial report.
Idaho State Police is investigating the crash. Dailyfly reported that the state police review was requested and that such investigations are standard practice in officer-involved crashes. That outside review matters in a case like this, where a routine response call turned into an injury collision in a busy part of town.
Highway 41 is one of the main north-south routes through the Rathdrum area, and Lancaster Road carries steady local traffic across a corridor that has been under growing pressure from development and construction planning. The Idaho Transportation Department says the Rathdrum Prairie area is the focus of a transportation study aimed at improving safety and reducing congestion.

That broader work includes major projects nearby. ITD says construction on the State Highway 41 bridge over the BNSF railroad tracks, which connects Highway 41 and Highway 53 in Rathdrum, is expected to begin between June and July and be finished by late fall. In Post Falls, the department is also reconstructing the Interstate 90 and Highway 41 interchange to improve safety, traffic flow and connectivity.
Local planning has also pointed to a possible Lancaster Road widening project between Highway 41 and Meyer Road, with Rathdrum seeking about $3 million in federal aid toward a project estimated at $7 million to $8 million. Against that backdrop, Sunday’s crash underscored how quickly a call for service can turn into an emergency scene, and why the roads around Highway 41 remain under close scrutiny.
