Silver Lake Mall was emptied Friday afternoon after police received a violent threat that mentioned gun violence and a bomb, turning the largest indoor shopping center in North Idaho into an emergency scene at 200 W. Hanley Ave. in Coeur d’Alene. The call reached the mall’s administrative office at about 3:50 p.m., and officers quickly moved to secure the property, clear shoppers and employees, and investigate whether the danger was real.

Coeur d’Alene police, Kootenai County Sheriff’s deputies and Idaho State Police troopers all responded. Officers established a perimeter around the mall and checked vehicles in the parking lot as people were escorted out. By early evening, the building had been cleared.

Hanna Franck was inside the mall getting a pedicure when the evacuation began. Like everyone else inside, she had to leave quickly as the police response unfolded around the building. Seeing the mall surrounded by officers on Facebook made the scene feel even more immediate, a reminder of how fast a threat can spread fear through a busy retail center where families, workers and shoppers expect a routine afternoon.

Authorities said they had no information showing the threat was legitimate, but they treated it as real while they investigated. That caution reflects a wider problem in Idaho and across the country: swatting calls and hoax threats can trigger a large public-safety response even when no actual danger exists. The Federal Bureau of Investigation defines swatting as malicious hoax emergency reporting intended to provoke a law-enforcement response, and says targets can include schools, hospitals, places of worship, transportation hubs, public figures and ordinary people.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security also maintains guidance on how to prepare for, respond to and recover from swatting and other hoax threats. In Idaho, lawmakers and law-enforcement officials have recently discussed stronger anti-swatting penalties, underscoring how seriously officials view calls that can pull patrol officers, detectives and support crews away from other emergencies.

Silver Lake Mall has long been one of the most recognizable retail properties in Kootenai County. The mall opened in 1989 and drew about 75,000 people to its official opening day. The Knoll family bought the property in 2020 and has been working on revitalization efforts, trying to add tenants and community uses to a center that still anchors shopping traffic along Hanley Avenue and U.S. 95. Friday’s evacuation showed how quickly that familiar place can become the focus of a countywide security response.
