Parker police seek public comment in state accreditation review

Parker residents now have a direct opening to weigh in on the police department’s standing as the Town of Parker posts a public notice inviting comment on the agency’s state accreditation assessment. The review matters locally because Parker police serve more than 6,000 residents plus visitors, and the department has been described by the town as the first and only accredited law-enforcement agency in La Paz County.

The assessment is part of the Arizona Law Enforcement Accreditation Program, a voluntary statewide process administered by the Arizona Association of Chiefs of Police. Accreditation reviews in Arizona commonly examine policies, procedures, management, operations and support services, and agencies must meet 174 standards to obtain or keep the credential. In other Arizona cases, accreditation is valid for four years and requires annual compliance reports, giving Parker’s review lasting weight if the department keeps its status.

Chief Michael Bailey said Parker police began its self-assessment process in July 2022 and received a $160,000 U.S. Department of Justice grant to support the effort. Bailey said the money helped the department hire a full-time accreditation manager and overhaul department policies, part of a long push to maintain what the town has called its only accredited police agency in the county.

The notice sits inside the town’s broader public-notice system, where official materials are posted electronically. The Town Clerk’s page says Common Council regular meetings are held on the first and third Tuesday at 6:00 p.m., agendas are posted 24 hours in advance and public notices, agendas and minutes are available online. That structure puts the accreditation review in the same visible records system as other town business.

For Parker, the accreditation review is not just a paperwork exercise. It is a public test of whether the department’s standards, policies and accountability systems continue to meet outside review in a town where police service is tied closely to both everyday neighborhood calls and the visitor traffic that comes through the river community.
