New Lafayette County Rescue Rehabilitates At Risk Dogs, Seeks Support
Mangum K9 Rescue, a local 501(c)(3) started by Mary Francis Mangum in October 2024, has been working to rehabilitate at risk dogs that struggle in traditional shelters, providing medical care, behavioral rehabilitation, and foster based training. The small program highlighted its model on December 22, and is asking Lafayette County residents to consider fostering, volunteering, or donating to help meet community and public health needs.

Mangum K9 Rescue operates as a focused, foster based rehabilitation program for dogs that often do not thrive in conventional shelter environments. Founded in October 2024 by Mary Francis Mangum, the nonprofit accepts animals from strays, owner surrenders, and shelter referrals and places them in temporary homes where they receive individualized medical care, behavioral rehabilitation, and structured training. The group typically works with two to three dogs at a time to provide the intensive attention needed for recovery and readiness for adoption.
The program aims to address both animal welfare and community health concerns. By vaccinating, treating, and training dogs before adoption, the rescue reduces the risk of disease transmission, lowers the likelihood of bite incidents, and improves the chances that dogs will remain in their adoptive homes. Rehabilitated dogs receive basic obedience and house training so they enter the community as safer, more manageable companions. Those outcomes can ease pressure on municipal shelters that are often stretched for resources and space, and they can reduce the social and economic strain on families who face unexpected veterinary or behavioral challenges.
Mangum K9 Rescue also highlights systemic equity issues in local animal welfare. Many owner surrenders stem from economic hardship, limited access to affordable veterinary services, or a lack of behavioral support. Small, intensive programs like this one can serve as a bridge for households facing those barriers, but they rely heavily on volunteers, foster families, and community donations to remain viable.

The rescue includes adoption profile photos with its outreach and is actively recruiting foster homes and volunteers in Lafayette County. Residents who are interested in fostering or helping can contact the organization at Mangumk9services@gmail.com. Supporting this work can strengthen public health, reduce shelter crowding, and expand access to safe pet ownership across the county.
