Ole Miss Reloads at Receiver After Jase Mathews Flip and Portal Additions
Ole Miss landed 4-star receiver Jase Mathews, who flipped from Auburn and joins several transfer additions, bolstering the Rebels’ receiving corps and in-state recruiting momentum.

Ole Miss added one of Mississippi’s top high school receivers when Jase Mathews, a 6-foot-1, 193-pound standout from Greene County High School in Leakesville, flipped his commitment from Auburn and announced his decision at a ceremony at his school. The move gives new head coach Pete Golding another high-profile in-state target as the Rebels reshape a receiving room already bolstered by multiple transfer-portal additions.
Mathews announced his switch in a ceremony streamed on his Instagram page and spoke directly about the move and his connection to home. “I feel like I've been lost,” Mathews said at the ceremony. “When you lost, you just need to find your way back home.” Mathews had been verbally committed to Auburn since Aug. 8 before changing course on Dec. 5.
Recruiting services place Mathews among the nation’s top prospects. The 247Sports Composite lists him as the No. 13 wide receiver nationally, No. 95 player overall and the No. 5 player in Mississippi. A separate report lists him as the No. 11 wide receiver in the country. Mathews considered multiple finalists in his recruitment, including LSU, and one outlet reported Ole Miss beat Auburn, Texas A&M and LSU for his signature.
The receiver room Golding inherits is changing quickly. Portal additions expected to join the corps include Johntay Cook, Darrell Gill, Isaiah Spencer, Horatio Fields and Cameron Miller, complementing existing targets such as Deuce Alexander, Caleb Odom and Caleb Cunningham. The program’s 2026 class stood at 19 players and climbed into the top 25 nationally, with roster movement cited as a factor in that rise.
Golding’s promotion from defensive coordinator followed the departure of Lane Kiffin to LSU, and Mathews’ decision marks one of several early flips credited to the new staff. Mathews is the third flip for Golding’s 2026 class, underscoring a push to keep in-state talent and respond to coaching turnover around the region.

The flip has generated portal speculation beyond the receiver room. WLOX reporter Matt DeGregorio suggested fans should watch Auburn quarterback Deuce Knight in the transfer portal, noting a close relationship between Knight and Mathews and saying the pair spoke before the flip. DeGregorio also posted on social media that “4-star WR Jase Mathews signs with Ole Miss. Despite verbally committing to Auburn, one of the top receivers in the class flips to play for the Rebels.”
For Lafayette County and Oxford-area fans, Mathews’ decision matters on several levels. Keeping a top Mississippi prospect in-state helps local recruiting narratives and fuels optimism for on-field depth at Vaught-Hemingway. It also sustains economic and cultural momentum tied to game-day attendance and community engagement when high-profile signees choose Ole Miss over out-of-state offers.
Next steps for local observers include watching whether Mathews signs a National Letter of Intent, how quickly the portal receivers integrate, and whether the portal speculation around Deuce Knight materializes. Mathews’ arrival reshapes options for the 2026 offense and gives Golding an immediate example of retaining Mississippi talent as he builds his program.
