Ole Miss wins first SEC men's golf title since 1985
Ole Miss ended a 41-year SEC golf drought Sunday, beating Florida 4-1 as Tom Fischer and Cameron Tankersley delivered the clinchers. The Rebels now head into NCAA play with momentum.

For the first time in 41 years, Ole Miss men’s golf brought home an SEC championship, and the reaction in Oxford and Lafayette County matched the scale of the drought that ended in St. Simons Island, Georgia. The No. 12 Rebels beat No. 3 Florida 4-1 on Sunday at Sea Island Golf Club, giving the program only its second SEC team title and its first since the 1984 squad under Ernest Ross.
The win mattered because it was not built on an easy bracket. Ole Miss entered the SEC Championship as the No. 4 seed in a league field that included 11 of the top 25 teams and five of the top 10. The Rebels opened with a 265, 15 under par, which the athletic department said was the second-lowest opening round in SEC Championship history. They then posted a 4.5-0.5 win over Texas A&M before knocking off top-ranked Auburn in the semifinals, turning a strong week into a title run.

Chris Malloy’s team finished it with the kind of poise that has defined the best Ole Miss postseason groups. Tom Fischer set the tone in the final with a 5&4 victory, and Cameron Tankersley clinched the championship with a 1-up win over Florida. Cohen Trolio and Daniel Tolf finished tied in their matches after the title was secured, a reminder of how complete the Rebels were across the lineup.
The breakthrough gives Ole Miss a new place in program history, but it also changes the conversation around what this team can still do. The Rebels have reached postseason play nine straight times, and this group now carries the weight of being the second Ole Miss men’s golf team ever to win the conference crown. Rick Cleveland said of Malloy’s team: “They’re tough. Everybody counted us out, but they are built for this event.”
That toughness now carries into the national tournament. NCAA Regionals begin May 18, with the NCAA Championships set for May 29-June 3 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California. For Oxford, the SEC title is more than a trophy from Georgia. It is proof that Ole Miss golf can still set the standard in one of the nation’s deepest conferences, and it gives the Rebels a national stage with real postseason expectations attached.
