Lafayette County law enforcement arrested Dennis Wayne Mitchell, 67, of Oxford on Dec. 18 and charged him with grooming of a minor, county officials said. The arrest followed an investigation by the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office that began when deputies were called on Nov. 25 about a juvenile welfare concern after a juvenile posted threats of self harm on social media. While deputies made contact with the juvenile they were informed of an allegation of sexual misconduct that reportedly occurred in Lafayette County. Investigators followed up on that allegation which led to Mitchell’s arrest.

Mitchell appeared before a Justice Court judge on Dec. 19 and was issued a $75,000 bond. Charges were filed in Lafayette County and the case will proceed through the county court system. At this stage the filing of charges is an allegation and not a finding of guilt. Prosecutors and defense counsel will have the opportunity to present evidence in subsequent hearings.

The sequence of events highlights several issues for local residents. First, routine welfare checks prompted by social media posts can uncover potential criminal allegations, placing law enforcement at the intersection of public safety and youth mental health. Second, the case underscores the importance of clear procedures for deputies handling juvenile contacts, including referral pathways to mental health and victim support services. Lafayette County officials may face calls from community members for more information on how juvenile welfare calls are handled and what supports are available to families.

For residents seeking updates, the case will be reported in county court records and through statements issued by the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office. Those concerned about child safety, or who have information relevant to the investigation, should contact local authorities. The incident is likely to prompt local conversations about prevention, reporting, and the resources available to young people in crisis. The matter remains before the courts and further proceedings will determine the case outcome.
