Tineshe Kee spent years carrying two timelines at once, raising a family while finishing the education she had put on hold. This spring, the Oxford native reached the stage beside her daughter, Alexis Kee, turning separate school journeys into one family milestone in Lafayette County.

Kee, 44, grew up in Oxford and graduated from Oxford High School before later returning to college after becoming a mother at 17. She is the mother of three children and the grandmother of a 2-year-old grandson. Her path through higher education included leaving Ole Miss during pregnancy complications, then coming back to complete a bachelor’s degree in applied behavioral sciences with a minor in sociology and later a master’s degree in counselor education.

The road to that point was shaped by loss and physical strain as much as determination. In 2023, Kee endured the death of her mother, back surgery, the loss of a cousin and the premature birth of her first grandchild, who spent months in a Memphis hospital. Through that period, she worked as a substitute teacher in the Oxford School District, where she said the students gave her the encouragement she needed to keep going.

Finishing the degree also meant long drives and long weeks. Kee traveled 2.5 hours several times a week for seven months to complete internship requirements, a commitment that underscored how much time and money families often invest when education is pursued later in life. Her graduation was not only a personal achievement but also a reminder that access to advancement can depend on persistence, transportation, child care and the steady support of a community.

Alexis Kee built her own record at Oxford High School, where she was part of the Lady Chargers’ 7A powerlifting championship team and also took part in track and photography. Her success and her mother’s walked forward together, with each encouraging the other through the process.

For the Kees, the shared ceremony marked more than two diplomas. It reflected a generation moving forward together, with education serving as a family achievement and a public sign of what can happen when sacrifice, support and timing finally meet.
