Oxford police respond to apparent self-inflicted shooting at apartment complex

Police and fire crews converged on The Links apartments Thursday evening after a 6:46 p.m. call about an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Responders were sent to a building near the entrance of the complex on Private Road 3151, just off Highway 6, in a part of Oxford where a major emergency can be seen quickly by nearby tenants and passing traffic.

Officials had not said whether the shooting was fatal, and no identity information had been released. Oxford Police Department officers led the response, with the Oxford Fire Department also dispatched to the scene, underscoring the multi-agency nature of the call as crews worked in the residential complex.

The Links at Oxford is listed at 44 Private Road 3151. Current apartment listings place the complex about 3 miles from the University of Mississippi and on the orange bus route, with the Oxford Square only minutes away. That location makes the property a familiar stop for students and a heavily trafficked residential site for nearby neighbors, which helps explain why an emergency there draws immediate attention across town.

Thursday’s response also landed in a place with a recent history of major police calls. Oxford police responded to a shooting at The Links Apartments in March 2024 and later announced an arrest in that case. In August 2021, police responded after a man had been shot at the complex, and that incident was later tied to a murder investigation. Those earlier cases left the apartment community with a public-safety profile that residents around Oxford remember well.

Oxford police say the department has 91 sworn officers and more than 114 total staff, a force size that reflects the scale of the response when serious calls come in at large apartment complexes.
