Package Thefts Surge in Lafayette County, Officials Urge Precautions

Deputies have received multiple reports in recent weeks of packages taken from home porches before recipients could retrieve them, often during daytime hours when residents are at work. The trend matters because it imposes financial and emotional burdens on households, and officials are asking neighbors to take steps to reduce risk and report suspicious activity.

In recent weeks deputies in Lafayette County have investigated several incidents in which delivered packages were removed from homes before the intended recipients could retrieve them. Many of the reported thefts occurred during daytime hours when residents were at work or away from home, a pattern that local law enforcement says points to quick, opportunistic crimes rather than prolonged surveillance.

"Package theft is a crime of opportunity," Lafayette County Sheriff Joey East said. "Most of these thefts take only a few seconds. A thief can walk up to a porch, grab a box and be gone before anyone realizes what happened. We want our community to be aware and take simple steps to protect themselves." Deputies are actively patrolling neighborhoods and investigating each call, and the sheriff's office has urged residents to help reduce the number of incidents.

Practical steps to lower the chance of becoming a victim include tracking deliveries and arranging to be home when a package is scheduled to arrive. When that is not possible, residents are advised to ask a family member, neighbor, or friend to retrieve packages, or to use secure delivery options such as having items sent to a workplace, a trusted neighbor, or a secure pickup location or package locker. For high value items requiring extra security, request a signature at delivery so boxes are not left unattended. Residents can also provide delivery instructions asking drivers to place packages in less visible locations such as a side door, back porch, or behind a planter.

Visible security cameras and video doorbells can deter thieves and provide evidence if a theft occurs, and anyone with home security footage is encouraged to save it for investigators. Residents who suspect they have had a package stolen should first confirm the delivery with the carrier and then contact the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office to file a report. "Our deputies are actively patrolling neighborhoods and investigating each report, but we also rely on our community’s eyes and ears," East said. "If you see something that doesn’t look right, please call us." Anyone with information about recent package thefts is asked to call the sheriff's office at 662-234-6421.

Beyond the immediate loss of goods and money, frequent porch thefts strain families who cannot easily change delivery routines, including workers who lack flexible schedules or secure alternatives. Community vigilance and modest investments in security can reduce opportunities for thieves while broader solutions such as more accessible secure pickup options would address inequities that leave some households more exposed.
