Racist Vandalism Damages Holiday Set at Powerhouse Arts Center
On November 24, the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council reported that two people removed part of a set from the Powerhouse Community Arts Center overnight, and the piece was later found in the parking lot defaced with racist slurs. The damaged set, built by Theatre Oxford volunteers for A Charlie Brown Christmas, prevented child cast members from rehearsing and is under investigation by the Oxford Police Department.

Yoknapatawpha Arts Council officials reported that on November 24 two individuals removed part of a set from the Powerhouse Community Arts Center overnight, and the removed section was discovered in the parking lot defaced with racist slurs. The set piece had been constructed by Theatre Oxford volunteers for the upcoming production of A Charlie Brown Christmas. Because of the offensive vandalism children involved in the production were unable to rehearse with the set that Sunday.
The incident interrupted a volunteer driven effort to prepare a seasonal production that relies on donated time, materials, and community support. Community theaters operate with tight budgets, and unexpected damage increases repair costs and scheduling pressures. Lost rehearsal time for children can create cascading logistical challenges for directors, costume and set crews, and venue managers in the weeks before opening night.
Oxford Police Department is investigating the incident. Officials have asked anyone with information to contact the department. The report has prompted concern among parents, volunteers, and local arts patrons about safety and the presence of hateful graffiti in a public cultural space.
Beyond the immediate disruption to the production, the vandalism carries broader local consequences. Community arts events draw families and visitors who support nearby restaurants and shops, and obtaining or replacing set materials adds financial strain to nonprofit arts groups already coping with rising material and operational costs. The reputational harm of a racially charged act can also dampen volunteer recruitment and audience attendance unless community leaders and law enforcement respond promptly.
Local leaders and arts organizers now face the task of repairing the damaged set, rescheduling rehearsals, and reassuring families that the center is a safe place for children and performers. For community members who saw or heard anything related to the incident, the Oxford Police Department is requesting tips and information. Contact the Oxford Police Department to provide any information that may assist the ongoing investigation.
