Stephen A. Smith Attending Ole Miss-LSU Game in Oxford, Media Draw Expected
Stephen A. Smith told ESPN’s First Take he’ll be in Oxford Thursday night for the No. 17 Ole Miss vs. No. 7 LSU game at SJB Pavilion, saying he “promised” to show up.

Oxford residents should expect a larger national footprint at SJB Pavilion Thursday night after ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith announced on First Take that he will be in Oxford for the No. 17 Ole Miss matchup with No. 7 LSU. Smith said, “As you know, I talked some mess about Ole Miss. … And there were folks that dared me to come down there. And I promised them that I would. So I am showing up tomorrow night. I will be in Oxford, Mississippi.”
The game, listed with an 8 p.m. tip-off and slated for ESPN broadcast, comes with high stakes for Ole Miss’ SEC positioning and for local ticket demand. The matchup pairs Rebel momentum against an LSU squad ranked seventh nationally; the national broadcast and Smith’s on-air confirmation raised expectations for a packed Pavilion and multiple “special guests,” with the contest framed as a key, high-profile showdown.

Smith’s visit follows a public back-and-forth with Ole Miss head coach Yolett McPhee‑McCuin that began last month when Smith made critical remarks about Ole Miss and Oxford. McPhee‑McCuin responded in a press conference, accepted Smith’s invitation to appear on his podcast, and secured a promise: “I got love for you,” Smith told Coach Yo earlier, adding, “And because it’s you, I’m going to come down to Oxford, Mississippi. It’s just for you. Ain’t nobody else getting me down to Oxford, Mississippi.” He reiterated the commitment on First Take and even scanned his schedule on air, saying, “I’m coming to a game. I’m looking at your schedule right now… I might try to make it for LSU.”
The visit has already energized campus athletics networks. Coach McPhee‑McCuin’s social post captured the build-up: “When your football coach texts you first thing in the AM to say he’s pulling up with the fellas Thursday!!!! 💙❤️😁🏈🏀” McPhee‑McCuin said she received a text from Ole Miss football coach Pete Golding and that members of the football team are expected to attend, a development that could swell the crowd beyond typical women’s basketball turnout.
On the court, Ole Miss arrives riding an impressive win over Tennessee, a 94-81 result in which Cotie McMahon scored a game-high 39 points and has averaged 24.5 points per game against SEC opponents. Latasha Lattimore and Christen Iwuala each recorded double figures in the Tennessee game. Coach McPhee‑McCuin praised McMahon, “I don’t know if I’ve seen anything like that. Cotie is a generational player.”, and urged stronger turnout: “We had a good crowd tonight, but I was expecting more… We need more support, and we’re going to need it on Thursday against No. 7 LSU. Crowd support matters. It really does.”
Smith told viewers he is even rearranging his schedule to make the trip, “That’s why I’m missing the (New York) Knicks game.” With Ole Miss 12-0 at home this season and national attention converging on SJB Pavilion for an ESPN-televised Thursday night game, the outcome will matter locally for postseason positioning and nationally for narratives about the Rebels’ surge under McPhee‑McCuin. Whether the promised visit shifts momentum will be settled under the Pavilion lights.
