Lake County shut down Airport Road, County Road 111, to through traffic at the west railroad crossing Monday morning, forcing drivers who use the route between Waldo Road, County Road 27, and Highway 2 to find another way around. The closure runs from 6 a.m. Monday, May 18, through 7 p.m. Friday, May 22, and county officials said it was requested by CN Rail to allow work on the crossing surface and tracks.

The shutdown is not a full blockade of the corridor. Lake County said Airport Road remains open to residents and local traffic on either side of the rail crossing, but the crossing itself will not be open to highway traffic while crews remove and upgrade the rail infrastructure. For commuters, delivery drivers, school travel and emergency access, that means the key issue is not whether the road exists, but whether it can still function as a connector between Highway 2 and County Road 27.

That distinction matters in a county where even one rail crossing can shape how people move between homes, businesses and service routes. Airport Road is part of the county highway system, and the Highway Department says its job is to maintain a safe, cost-effective and efficient road and bridge network. The department’s construction-project page shows the Airport Road work is unfolding alongside other 2026 projects, including Highway 2 resurfacing, underscoring that Lake County drivers are navigating several disruptions at once.

The county’s notice gives residents a short planning horizon, but a firm one: work began Monday at 6 a.m. and is expected to finish Friday at 7 p.m. That schedule should help limit confusion for people in Two Harbors and elsewhere in the area who rely on Airport Road as a practical link rather than a destination.

For local traffic, access stays intact on both sides of the crossing. For everyone else, the closure turns a familiar shortcut into a detour for the rest of the week, with the impact felt most sharply by anyone trying to keep a commute, delivery run or emergency response on schedule.
