Lake County taxpayers had a hard deadline to mark on the calendar: first-half real estate taxes were due May 15, and the second half for most commercial and residential property was due October 15. Missing those dates can mean penalties and interest, and the county said penalty rates are listed on the back of each tax statement.

The reminder mattered most for homeowners who pay on their own instead of through escrow, along with seasonal property owners and anyone juggling more than one parcel. Lake County mails one tax statement each year, which means a bill can be easy to overlook until the due date is close. The county also said property owners who have not paid by November receive a courtesy letter showing tax and penalty amounts through the end of the year.

A new payment system added in 2026 gave taxpayers more ways to stay current. Lake County said it partnered with AutoAgent on Municipay, a platform that supports online payments and in-person credit card transactions. The county said users can set up an account, search for up-to-date tax information, update a mailing address, and arrange automated or recurring payments. Credit and debit card payments carry a 2.3% fee with a $2 minimum, while E-check and ACH payments carry a $1.50 flat fee.

Payments could be made in person at the tax department window on the main floor of the Lake County Courthouse, 601 3rd Ave, Two Harbors. Payments by mail go to Lake County Auditor, 601 3rd Ave, Two Harbors, MN 55616. Check or money order payments can also be left in the drop box at the entrance of the Law Enforcement Center at 613 3rd Ave, Two Harbors. Lake County said mailed envelopes must be postmarked by the due date to count as on time.

The county’s schedule varied by property type. Personal property taxes were due in full May 15. Mobile home taxes were due in two installments, August 31 and November 15. Agricultural property’s second half was due November 15. Minnesota law generally requires one-half of taxes over $100 to be paid before May 16, with the rest due before the following October 16, and the state says local property taxes help fund public schools, fire and police protection, streets, libraries and other services.

Lake County also said 2026 tax statements for taxes payable in 2026 were mailed together with 2026 valuation notices for taxes payable in 2027. Those valuation notices list classification and estimated market value, and the county said that is the time to contact the assessor with questions or concerns.
