Silver Bay softball has moved from feel-good story to legitimate Section 7A threat. With a 16-1 start that grew to 16-2 by May 14, the Mariners were not just winning the Polar Conference, they were making a case that a small Lake County school can push deep into June.

The climb has been built on the kind of wins that change how a season is judged. In late April at Proctor, Silver Bay beat Barnum 12-7, Warroad 16-8 and Denfeld 6-1, a stretch that showed the Mariners could handle ranked competition and score in bunches. Barnum entered that stretch as the top-ranked team in the class, making Silver Bay’s result a statement as much as a victory. By May 14, the scoreboard had Silver Bay at 10-1 in the Polar Conference and Barnum at 8-1, with Silver Bay also owning a 3-2 win over Barnum on May 12 and a 7-5 win over Duluth Denfeld on May 14.

For coach Mike Guzzo, in his 27th year running the program, the surge has been about more than one hot week. The roster is small, just 17 players, but it is deep in experience. Silver Bay was hitting .454 as a team in the May 13 update, with senior Natalie Walker batting .590 and a lineup built around returning juniors and a freshman catcher already producing at a high level. Guzzo’s group also gave itself something tangible to chase after players asked about the school record. He checked and found that a Silver Bay team 20 years ago finished second in the state with 25 wins.

The Mariners also showed their pitching could carry weight in a section race. On May 9, Silver Bay beat Ely 4-2 to reach 13-1, and junior Berkley Hoff struck out 10 in a battle of Section 7A powers. That result mattered beyond the box score because Ely and Silver Bay have both been positioned as contenders in the same postseason bracket.

The stakes rise quickly now. The Minnesota State High School League lists Silver Bay, Wm. Kelley High School as a Class 1A, Region 7A program with enrollment of 94, and Section 7A tournament play begins May 19 at Braun Park. Silver Bay already has recent playoff precedent, after winning the Polar League Single-A title and finishing 16-4 in 2024. This spring’s team has pushed past that standard and, with Barnum still close behind, the Mariners head into the section tournament with a real path to make county-wide noise.
