Cottage Grove Honors Olympian Dyrol Burleson With Sign, Memorial Trail
Cottage Grove named a trail after Dyrol Burleson, the second American to break the 4-minute mile and a two-time Olympian who trained on River Road.

City staff installed signs along River Road this month, formally marking a portion of Dyrol Burleson's historic training route as the "Dyrol Burleson Trail" and honoring one of the most accomplished athletes Cottage Grove has produced.
The physical installation completed a recognition process that began when Mayor Candace Solesbee issued a proclamation honoring Burleson on Aug. 25, 2025. Coach Bud Taylor accepted the award on Burleson's behalf at the ceremony tied to the trail designation.
Burleson's standing in American track history stretches across two decades of competition. He set the 1,500-meter American record in 1958, the same era in which he became the second American runner to break the 4-minute mile. He went on to represent the United States at the 1960 Rome Olympics and the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. His path to those Games ran through Eugene: Burleson arrived at the University of Oregon as the school's first track and field scholarship athlete. He later earned inductions into both the Cottage Grove High School Athletics Hall of Fame and the National Track and Field Hall of Fame.

The River Road designation transforms the stretch of road where Burleson trained into a named, publicly marked trail. The signage directs visitors along the route, creating a physical connection between Cottage Grove's present-day streets and the competitive career of one of its most decorated natives. Runners, school programs, and local clubs now have a named route that grounds Burleson's national and international legacy in the community where it started. Residents can contact city parks staff for mapping and accessibility information.
